Compliance Objectives

Setting objectives, whether they’re security, privacy, or quality-is critical to providing clear direction for your organization. Objectives ensure that your actions are aligned with your overall business goals and serve as a benchmark for evaluating how well your controls and processes are working. Therefore, objectives should be easy to measure, specific, and achievable. Remember to regularly monitor and track the progress of objectives and evaluate them annually. In addition, do not forget to set new goals as soon as the previous ones have been achieved to keep your business on track and fully complaint.
Setting objectives requires careful planning and alignment with your organization’s goals. Follow these steps for clarity, impact, and compliance:
Step 1: Identify the Purpose of Your Objectives
Before setting objectives, clarify their purpose. Are they meant for regulatory compliance, enhancing security, ensuring quality, or managing privacy? Defining the reason behind the objectives helps ensure they are relevant, effective, and aligned with your organization’s needs.
Step 2: Understand Applicable Requirements
Review the specific standard or regulatory framework that applies to your organization, such as ISO 27001 for information security, ISO 9001 for quality management, or ISO 27701 for privacy management. Familiarizing yourself with these requirements ensures that objectives align with compliance expectations.
Step 3: Define the Scope of Your Objectives
Determine which areas of the business your objectives will cover. Will they apply to the entire organization or specific departments, projects, or security processes? Defining the scope ensures clarity and prevents overly broad or unrealistic goals.
Step 4: Align Objectives with Organizational Goals
Objectives should support your company’s strategic direction. Aligning security, privacy, or quality objectives with business goals ensures that they contribute to broader success while effectively prioritizing resources.
Step 5: Set Clear and Measurable Objectives
Objectives should be specific, actionable, and measurable. Instead of a vague goal like “Improve security”, define it as “Reduce security incidents by 20% over the next year”. A well-defined objective makes it easier to track progress and evaluate success.
Step 6: Apply SMART Criteria
Use the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound to structure objectives. This ensures they are realistic, clearly defined, and actionable.
Step 7: Involve Key Stakeholders
Engage leadership, employees, and relevant external parties in setting objectives. Their input ensures goals are practical, achievable, and aligned with both business needs and compliance requirements.
Step 8: Prioritize Risks and Opportunities
Identify key risks and opportunities related to security, privacy, or quality. Objectives should focus on addressing the most critical areas that could impact business operations, compliance, or customer trust.
Step 9: Promote Continuous Improvement
Your objectives should encourage ongoing enhancement of security and compliance processes. Setting progressive goals ensures your organization remains adaptive and proactive in improving its practices.
Step 10: Document Objectives in Compleye Online
Record each objective, including the assigned owner, key results, required evidence, and a start date. Proper documentation ensures accountability and clear tracking of progress.
Examples of Compliance Objectives:
- Achieve compliance with [Standard/Law X] and successfully obtain certification or pass third-party audits.
- Maintain zero data breaches across all systems and processes.
- Prevent security incidents related to the release of new software features or functionality.
- Ensure no critical non-conformities are identified during third-party audits.
- Ensure all OPC (Operational Process Controls) are performed on time and according to policy.
- Implement and maintain an online security awareness program with regular assessments and tests.
- Maintain defined security benchmarks on all scanning tools to detect and mitigate threats effectively.
- Address and resolve high-risk vulnerabilities within a specified time frame to reduce exposure.
Step 11: Monitor and Review Progress
Regularly track performance in monthly compliance meetings and assess whether objectives are being met. Define security metrics aligned with your goals and set specific targets to maintain compliance and continuous improvement.
